UNESCO, the United Nations cultural organization, has issued a report outlining the extensive damage caused by US occupation forces in Iraq to the archeological site of ancient Babylon, about 100 Km (60 miles) south of Baghdad.
The report was based on examinations of the site by prominent specialists, including John Curtis, John Russell and Elizabeth Stone.
It charges American and Polish forces with carrying out “a grave encroachment on this internationally known archaeological site.”
The report continues, “During their presence in Babylon, the MNF-I [Multi-National Forces] and contractors employed by them, mainly KBR, directly caused major damage to the city by digging, cutting, scraping, and leveling. Key structures that were damaged include the Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way.”

West to protect Iraqi heritage

"We must save the cultural heritage of Iraq while it is still time," said UNESCO deputy director general Francoise Riviere.
She said it was necessary to relaunch a campaign to stop the trafficking of stolen Iraqi treasures, as required under UN Resolution 1483 adopted in May 2003.
The committee said Iraqi and U.S. forces had a special responsibility to protect culturally important sites, especially ancient Babylon, south of Baghdad, and Ur in the southeast of the country.

3rd ah hoc meeting of experts on Babylon

Following the request of Iraq's Ministry of Culture, a working group for the archaeological site of Babylon was created in June 2005. Its aim is to study the damage caused by the installation of a military base on this exceptional site in April 2003.
This third meeting of experts will address the progress achieved following the previous session held in Berlin in December 2005. This falls within the framework of the preparation of an evaluation report by the Iraqi State Board of Heritage and Antiquities as well as by other international institutions.
The conclusions of this ad hoc group of experts on Babylon, will be presented to the International Co-ordination Committee for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Iraq.
