"We must save the cultural heritage of Iraq while it is still time," said UNESCO deputy director general Francoise Riviere.
She said it was necessary to relaunch a campaign to stop the trafficking of stolen Iraqi treasures, as required under UN Resolution 1483 adopted in May 2003.
The committee said Iraqi and U.S. forces had a special responsibility to protect culturally important sites, especially ancient Babylon, south of Baghdad, and Ur in the southeast of the country.
